Let’s talk about ‘corrections’

“Corrections” & Rewards can be the most valuable thing in dog training.

Let me start by saying this: Rewards are used to reinforce a WANTED behavior while Corrections are applied towards UNWANTED behavior. Corrections are the ONLY way to stop an unwanted behavior. If someone ever tells you that you can stop an unwanted behavior by ‘redirecting’ with a toy or a treat, what you are doing is NEGOTIATING with your dog. The unwanted behavior won’t decrease and your dog is more likely to practice the behavior again.

For example JUMPING. The only way to stop the behavior is to make the act of jumping uncomfortable. If you ignore the jumping, the dog will not learn that JUMPING sucks so the behavior will happen again. If you don’t correct your dog for jumping and tell your dog to ‘SIT’ instead, the dog has just learned that Jump, Jump, Jump, Sit = Reward. Hope that makes sense. So if you don’t like the behavior your dog is doing, Correct it. It’s the only way to stop it.
